FORESTVILLE, NY (April 11, 2011) – The results are in from the 28th annual San Diego International Wine Competition, held in San Diego, California, and Merritt Estate succeeds again with an award that is a first for the winery.

The San Diego competition, which took place this year on April 2 and 3, is one of the longest running wine competitions in the United States. Robert Whitley, director of the competition, is a syndicated wine columnist with more than 20 years of experience in the world of wine journalism. Judges for the competition included winemakers, educators, wine industry professionals and restaurant professionals.

Judges presented silver awards to wines considered above average in their category and gold awards to wines that rise above the basic recommendation for wines in their category.  Platinum awards were reserved for wines nominated for Best of Show in the red, white, rose, sparkling and dessert wine categories.

Merritt Winery’s best selling Bella Rosa, a sweet, full-bodied Lambrusco style red wine, took a platinum award in the red wine category.  While Merritt wines have received awards from bronze to double gold, this is the winery’s first platinum award.

“Our Bella Rosa has consistently won awards in multiple competitions and we have always been happy with the results it receives,” said Jason Merritt, General Manager for Merritt Estate Winery. “This platinum award takes it to another level for our winery and for the reputation our wine holds.  It shows that we’re continuing to head in the right direction.”
