FORESTVILLE, NY (July 13, 2011) – Merritt Estate Winery continues their road to excellence with impressive wins at the 31st annual San Francisco International Wine Competition. With nearly 4,200 entries from over 1,200 wineries, the fight for the most prestigious awards proved fierce.
The San Francisco International Wine Competition is the self proclaimed “largest and most respected competition” in the United States. Held June 17-19 at the famed Hotel Nikko in the heart of San Francisco, 48 judges came together to evaluate wines from 20 states and 29 countries. The continued growth of the competition helps to highlight the strength of the wine industry and the astounding number of medals awarded emphasizes the incredible product industry professionals release every year.
Out of 3,094 medals awarded, only 153 wines received the distinguished double gold. Merritt Estate Winery’s Bella Ice, a sweet red wine with intense Concord flavor, was one of the few to receive the award. The winery took home two additional medals from the competition. Edelweiss, a sweet and fruity white with a flowery aroma and a fresh grape taste, won a silver medal and Bella Rosa, a sweet, full-bodied Lambrusco style red wine and Merritt’s best seller, won a bronze medal.
The 30th Riverside International Wine Competition, held on the south coast of California on May 4-6, awarded approximately 1300 medals to a wide variety of wines which were anonymously judged by professional wine judges from across the nation.
Merritt Estate Winery was awarded a gold medal for Bella Ice and a silver medal for their popular Bella Rosa.
“Having two of our most popular wines win such prestigious awards is a true honor,” says Jason Merritt, general manager at Merritt Estate Winery. “It is great to see that we are able to compete with large, internationally known wineries and be able to come out on top.”
