FORESTVILLE, NY (March 26, 2012) – Merritt Estate Winery intends on keeping the momentum going this season when it comes to their participation in national wine competitions. The staff at the winery puts year round effort in to producing their award winning wines and their attention to detail is directly reflected in the honors they have recently received.
Jerry D. Mead’s New World International Wine Competition is the only competition of its kind in America and possibly the world. For 21 years the competition opened its doors to wines from any region of the “New World” which includes North America, Central America, South America, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. This year, for the first time, the NWIWC expanded its reach to all wine producing nations accepting entries from around the world. Even with this change, the competition still remains unique in nature. Unlike other competitions, the NWIWC places entries not only in categories with the same types of wines but with other wines that have the same price point. The competition boasts that this more accurately determines which wine is genuinely the overall best of the variety or type.
Merritt Estate Winery took home one award from the competition. Bella Rosa, a sweet and full-bodied Lambrusco style red wine, won a Best of Class Gold award in its category.
In its 19th year, the Monterey Wine Competition recently took place in King City, California at the Salinas Valley Fairgrounds. The competition has taken the use of social media to the next level offering something to entrants that no other competition in America currently offers. Each of the judges from the competition made a commitment to post detailed tasting notes on their ten favorite wines. These posts are made on the internet either on each judge’s personal blog or social media page or on a major wine site. Competition coordinators and officials are slowly beginning to take in to account just how much the current generation depends on social media for information. Offering this type of publicity for wine entries is a major draw.
Merritt Estate Winery took home three awards from the competition. Gewurztraminer, an off-dry, rich and aromatic white wine with a bright citrus finish, won a gold medal. Bella Ice, a sweet red wine with intense Concord grape flavor won a silver medal. Merritt’s best-selling Bella Rosa was named Best Sweet Red, an impressive title from the competition and a first for the multi award winning wine.
Merritt Estate is located in Lake Erie Wine Country, the largest grape growing region of New York State located along the shores of Lake Erie. The grapes and wines produced by Merritt rival the quality of premium vintages throughout the world.
