Mazza Vineyards

One of the first wineries in Pennsylvania, family owned and operated Mazza Vineyards helped pave the way for the region’s wine industry.
When Robert Mazza’s family moved to America from Calabria, Italy, they brought with them the desire to carry on their grape-growing heritage. Robert was a young boy in North East, Pa. at a time when new varieties of wine grapes were being planted and laws allowing commercial wineries were just beginning to be re-visited. He knew as a teen that he wanted to open a winery, and to that end, he graduated from college in 1972 and incorporated Mazza Vineyards with his brother, Frank, in the same year.
Although you might expect Italians to make Italian wine, the region’s climate is most suitable for Germanic grape varieties. So Robert brought in a talented German winemaker who taught him how to make excellent Germanic-style wines. That tradition of quality has carried on for almost four decades, and Mazza wines have steadily evolved into award winners that compete with and beat German wines on an international stage.
Not forgetting their Italian heritage, however, the Mazza’s have recently introduced their “La Famiglia” brand of wines that includes Barbera, Nebbiolo, and Sangiovese, all dry red classic Italian varietals grown along Lake Erie on a site with ideal soils and climate for varietals that are typically not seen in the region. Mazza Vineyards currently boasts a wine list showcasing a wide variety of wines, ranging from sweet table wines to dry premiums, fruit wines, sparkling wines, and even dessert wines including the limited and very rare Ice Wine of Vidal Blanc.
At Mazza Vineyards, the entire family participates in maintaining the Mazza commitment to quality. After graduation from the University of Adelaide in South Australia with a master’s degree in oenology in 2005, Robert’s son Mario joined long-time winemaker Gary Mosier, and today, Mario and Uruguayan native Carolina Damiano Cores carry on the winemaking tradition. Also in the family business are Mario’s wife, Mel, Robert’s wife, Kathie, and daughter Vanessa, who serves as creative consultant. Together, with their large and well-trained staff, Mazza personnel work hard to make sure your visit to Lake Erie Wine Country is an unforgettable experience, complete with great atmosphere and great wine.
