South Shore Wine Company

A revitalized Civil War-Era wine cellar, superb wines and a seasonal café make a stop at the South Shore Wine Company worth every moment!
Over the past century, ownership of the South Shore Inn in North East, Pennsylvania has changed hands a number of times. It has been a winery, barn, basket-factory, hotel, banquet hall, restaurant and bar throughout its past, and there are few local residents who don’t have memories of being a part of its history.
For all its years in service, it seems a mystery that hardly anyone, not even the neighbors, knew about the gem that lay beneath the sprawling structure. Bob Mazza knew, and in 2007 he purchased the vacant, run-down property and set out to restore the historical Civil War-era stone wine cavern that had been hidden for nearly 100 years. Today, the South Shore Wine Co. is a sister winery to Mazza Vineyards, also in North East, and Mazza Chautauqua Cellars in Mayville, NY.
The investment of time, labor and money was worth it to the Mazza’s, who wanted to see the cellar restored to its former glory so they could share it with the world. Now visitors can enjoy the extraordinary ambiance as they take a walk back in time and explore the one-of-a-kind cellar. It now looks much like it did when it was built in the 1860’s, with the addition of a modern tasting bar and a remodeled entrance.
Mazza Wines produces a unique line of wines for the revitalized South Shore Wine Company, distinct from the wines available at Mazza Vineyards, pairing the historical brand name with almost 40 years of wine making experience. The renovated building also includes banquet facilities and a seasonal café where visitors can sit in the classic screened-in porch and enjoy a light meal and a glass of wine while viewing nearby grape vineyards. This is one stop that shouldn’t be skipped!
